Biographical / Historical

"Accreditation" means that an institution has been recognized by an accrediting agency as maintaining a certain level of educational standards. Accrediting agencies in turn are reviewed for quality by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and/or the United States Department of Education (USDE). The accreditation system in American higher education began in the late 1800s and early 1900s as a way for colleges and universities to distinguish themselves from "diploma mills," i.e. institutions that don't educate but rather supply illegitimate diplomas or certificates for a fee.
