The Cooper Union Archives Collection of Student Handbooks
Scope and Contents
This collection contains student handbooks dating from 1938 through 2002. Traditionally issued by The Cooper Union at the beginning of each academic year, student handbooks contain rules, regulations, and information on topics such as school facilities, health and hygiene, and student activities. The first handbook, issued in 1938, contained information on sports, clubs, academic societies, employment assistance, and the physical location of various campus offices. Ove the years, the handbooks evolved to include illustrations and photos along with information about neighborhood resources and hang-outs, from the best place to get a camera fixed to warnings about the hygiene standards at certain restaurants. Later handbooks include advice on such matters as pregnancy tests, LGBTQ+ support hotlines, and staying safe in New York City. The handbook ceased physical publication after the 2002 issue.
