The Cooper Union Foundation Building leases, 1858-1872
Scope and Contents
This collection contains lease agreements between Peter Cooper and/or the Trustees of The Cooper Union and renters of space in the Cooper Union foundation building during the years 1858-1862 and 1871-1872. Renters range from individuals renting office space; to retailers using the space to buy and sell furniture, coal, cigars, and groceries, among other items; to law and insurance offices; to religious outfits; to literary societies and publishing houses; to medical professionals, including Gardner Q. Colton, a dentist who manufactured his own laughing gas in the premises.

Biographical / Historical
The Cooper Union originally rented out the street level and second floor of the Foundation Building to tenants, with the rent going towards yearly expenses of the school. Eventually, the growth of the school required expansion into these spaces, and The Cooper Union stopped renting Foundation Building space to commercal businesses.
