Abstract The implications of reversing flow in-airway surgery fires were investigated. A numerical model was developed to simulate conditions during the breathing cycle. Steady-state data obtained by previous investigators were incorporated into the model. The model was used to predict flammability characteristics including equivalence ratio, mass burning rate, and total mass of fuel released during the course of both an inhale and an exhale.
